IAAF World Championships

HANOVER, N.H. - Sean Furey ’04, Dartmouth’s javelin throw record holder, qualified for the IAAF Track and Field World Championships after placing third at the U.S. Championships in Oregon.

“This is something that I’ve been dreaming of and working towards for so many years now that I almost feel like I’ve done it before,” said Furey. “I feel very fortunate to have such a tremendous support group that has made training and competing easier in the years since I’ve graduated from Dartmouth.”

At the U.S. Championships, Furey finished with a toss of 76.16 meters (249-10). Georgia’s Chris Hill won the event with a mark of 83.87 meters (275-02).

Following the U.S. Championships, he went to Europe for a couple of weeks and threw in three meets. Furey won the Karlskrona Grand Prix in Karlskrona, Sweden with a mark of 76.98 meters, took fourth at the Lappeenranta Elite Games in Finland with a toss of 78.48 meters and won the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium with 77.05 meters.

“It was probably the most consistent I have ever been,” said Furey after competing overseas, “and they were very good throws for me considering the type of wind conditions at each meet. The physical, mental and technical aspects of my throw are starting to come together and I’m excited to have more opportunities to compete against better throwers and overcome new obstacles.”

The World Championships are set for August 15-23 in Berlin. Furey will be competing on August 21 in the preliminary round, followed by the finals on the last day of competition.

While at Dartmouth, Furey was one of the best throwers in Big Green history as he still holds the record for the javelin at 242-2 and was named an All-American as a member of the Dartmouth track and field team.
