Michael Brown joins the Big Green as an assistant coach for the
2009-10 staff. Brown most recently served as an assistant coach for two
years at Idaho State.
In Brown’s two years with the Bengals of Idaho State, he helped the team win 25 games while advancing to the Big Sky Tournament semifinals both seasons. Prior to his stint in Pocatello, he began his collegiate coaching career in the state of Maine at Bowdoin as an assistant during the 2006-07 campaign. He helped coach Tim Gilbride lead the Polar Bears to a 15-10 mark and a fourth consecutive winning season, while also coaching the newest member of the Dartmouth staff, Tim Lane, a 2009 graduate of Bowdoin.
Brown was a two-time captain and four-year letterwinner with the Providence Friars, and was a big part of the 1994 squad that won the Big East championship. His 104 career starts rank fourth on the Friars’ all-time charts, while his 1,163 points place him 21st. Brown also contributed 359 assists during his four years, 12th most in Providence history.
As a senior, Brown was named the team’s Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Player and the Marvin Barnes Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, he received the college’s most prestigious athletic award, the Mal Brown Award, which is given to the Providence senior athlete who best personifies the ideals of sportsmanship, courage and honor. Brown, a native of central New York, graduated in 1996 with a degree in accountancy.
Brown played professionally overseas, most notably with the Brighton Bears of the British Basketball League from 1999-2004. In his final season with the Bears, he helped them to a 30-6 record and the BBL championship.
This past summer, Brown married the former Stephanie Pelletier, and the couple currently resides in Eastman, N.H.
