THIS WEEKEND
The Dartmouth men’s hockey team looks to rebound and get into the win column after an opening season loss to Harvard. The Big Green will help the Cornell Big Red open up its ECAC Hockey season on Friday before traveling to Colgate for its Silver Puck game on Saturday.
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
The Big Red opened season with a 3-2 overtime victory against Niagara
on Oct. 30, with Joe Devin scoring the game-winner in overtime. Cornell
also got goals from Colin Greening and Patrick Kennedy, while Riley
Nash chipped in a pair of assists. Goaltender Ben Scrivens picked up 28
saves in the victory. Cornell finished the night 2-for-8 on the power
play, while holding Niagara to one power play goal in six chances.
Greening and Nash lead the team in scoring with two points apiece.
Scrivens has a .933 save percentage on the year to go along with a 1.95
goals-against average. Cornell’s power play is converting on 25 percent
of its man advantage opportunities (2-for-8) while killing off 83.3
percent of its short-handed chances (5-for-6).
SERIES HISTORY
In one of Dartmouth’s longest series, Cornell holds the advantage, 71-42-2. The two teams met for the first time on Feb. 5, 1909 with a 1-0 Dartmouth win in Hanover. Since Bob Gaudet took over the reins at his alma mater his teams have gone 15-11-1. In that span the Big Green has gone 5-8-1 at Lynah Rink while going 10-3 in Thompson Arena. Last season the two teams split the season series as the Big Red won 3-1 at home while the Big Green rebounded with a 5-4 overtime win in Hanover.
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
After seven games, Colgate has 18 players with at least one point and
10 players with at least one goal. Austin Smith enters the weekend with
a team best seven points on four goals and three helpers, while
returning All-America David McIntyre is second on the team in scoring
with six points – all assists (ranks tied for 45th with 0.86 assists
per game). Seven players have four or more points thus far. Rewind to
last year at this same juncture of the season, the Raiders had 14
different players with at least one point and only six goal scorers
through seven games.
SERIES HISTORY
Colgate and Dartmouth have one of the most evenly matched series the Big Green has played. The two teams began playing in 1929 as Dartmouth opened up with an 8-1 victory in New York. The Big Green began the series with 11 straight wins and currently leads in the series, 40-38-4. Since Bob Gaudet began coaching at Dartmouth his teams have gone 16-12-3. Last season the two traded wins as Dartmouth took a 1-0 win in Hamilton and Colgate came back with a 1-0 victory in Hanover.

YOUNG GUNS

OFFENSIVE DEFENSE
Defenseman Evan Stephens has been Dartmouth’s top scoring blueliner for the past two seasons. Stephens was the top scoring d-man last season with 19 while Joe Stejskal recorded 12. Peter Boldt increased his scoring as he had nine. Stephens has already gotten into the points column for 2009-10 with an assist in Dartmouth's first game of the season.
BIG GREEN BROTHERS
Dartmouth will have three sets of brothers dotting the roster this season. Senior Joe Gaudet welcomed younger brother Jim last year. In 2009-10 older brothers Connor Goggin and Nick Walsh will welcome younger siblings Mark and Dustin.
JODY OH
Last season, goalie Jody O'Neill was named both the Ivy League and the ECAC’s Rookie of the year. The first time Dartmouth has had a player earn both honors since Hugh Jessiman in 2003.
CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Senior defenseman Peter Boldt is the 2009-10 Big Green captain. He will be the 118th captain in Dartmouth men’s hockey history. Classmate Joe Gaudet and junior Scott Fleming will serve as assistant captains.
NHL HOPEFULS
Dartmouth has four players currently on its roster that were drafted by NHL teams in the entry draft. Sophomores Troy Mattila and Joe Stejskal were both taken before coming to Dartmouth while Mark Goggin was drafted in 2008 and Dustin Walsh in 2009.
