HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth college athletic department is excited to lend its support to National Girls and Women in Sports Day with free events for local youth teams and groups this Feb. 20-21, 2009.

The Big Green - along with thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, association members, sponsors, students and parents across the country - will celebrate this national incentive to promote youth involvement in sports.

In celebration, the Dartmouth women's basketball game versus Penn on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 pm and the women's hockey game versus St. Lawrence on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4:00 pm will be Big Green's two special events to honor NGWSD. Both games will feature raffles and free giveaways throughout the contest.

These are ticketed events and in recognition of their participation in a sports program or youth group, your girls and boys teams are invited to receive complimentary admission to either, or both of these exciting women's basketball and women's ice hockey games

In order to participate, youth coaches/leaders must fill out the complimentary ticket list and fax it to Dartmouth Athletics by Feb. 18. All the information needed can be found in this document. For more information about NGWSD please view this flyer or contact Jillian Frey, Varsity Sports Coordinator, at 603-646-6561 or jillian.frey@dartmouth.edu.

NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

NGWSD is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition. The Coalition combines the experience and resources of the six premier girls- and women-serving organizations in the United States: Girl Scouts of the USA, Girls Incorporated, the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, National Women's Law Center, the Women's Sports Foundation and the YWCA USA.
