Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Dartmouth's Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Two upperclassmen paced their teams last weekend for the Big Green, as Ethan Shaw was tops in his team's first cross country race of the season and Virginia Peisch helped her team continue its undefeated start to the season. Shaw's victory helped Dartmouth cross the line first at the Hanover Country Club while Peisch's seven points in two games gave the Big Green wins over Pacific and Bryant.
Dartmouth Male Athlete of the Week:
Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine), Men's Cross Country, Junior
Ethan Shaw (Falmouth, Maine) shaved a minute off his time over last season's opening race as the Dartmouth cross country team got off to a winning start. The Big Green finished first of four teams, defeating Yale, Middlebury and Williams. Dartmouth and Yale dominated the race as each team had five runners among the top 10. But with Shaw finishing the 8K race with a time of 25:28.50 and four others among the top eight, the Big Green were able to take home the team title with 25 points to 30 for the Bulldogs.
Dartmouth Female Athlete of the Week:
Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany), Women's Field Hockey, Senior
(Koenigstein, Germany) has tallied nine points this season, including a season-high four assists in a win over Pacific last weekend. She also notched a goal and an assist in a win over Bryant. Currently the Big Green is 4-0 for the first time since 2000. Peisch started the season off with a bang as she recorded two assists in a game against Missouri State. Those two helpers gave her 33 in her four-year career at Dartmouth and made her the Big Green's overall leader in that category. Since that game she has recorded five more assists along with one goal and is third on the team in scoring. Peisch has been named to the Ivy League's weekly honor roll twice and is currently second nationally in assists per game.
