HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth men’s lacrosse captain Doug Rendall (Langhorne, Pa.) has been chosen as one of 30 national candidates for the 2009 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
Rendall was selected as of the nation’s top 30 senior men’s lacrosse players who define the meaning of student-athlete. The award is given annually to the Division I Student-Athlete of the Year in eight different sports who has notable achievements in four areas of excellence: Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition.
The defensive midfielder for the Big Green is one of five Ivy Leaguers up for the award and overall 26 different schools are represent on the list of 30 candidates.
Rendall, a two-year captain for Dartmouth, has played in 42 games in his career with the Big Green as a defensive midfielder. In his three years on the squad he has netted five goals and three assists for eight points. He has posted 55 ground balls and was at the top of that list on the Big Green with 27 a year ago.
Off the field, he participates in a diverse range of community programs. In the summer of 2008, he completed the Officer Candidates School of the United States Marine Corps. Regarded as an Honor Graduate, Rendall is commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps. On a weekly basis, he volunteers as a coach and mentor in surrounding communities. Rendall volunteers for the Vermont Special Olympics as a coach for Special Olympic athletes in White River Junciton. He also mentors a local 6th grade students, helping with assignments and other inquiries the student may have.
In the classroom, Rendall is a double major in Economics and Religion. He holds a 3.79 cumulative GPA and will earn his bachelor’s degree in June 2009. In 2007, he won the Timothy Wright Ellis Award, awarded to the Dartmouth male athlete who best shows extracurricular and scholastic drive, spirit, loyalty, and amiability.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior Class Award was launched during the 2001-02 season to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who remain committed to their university and pursue the many rewards that a senior season and complete college education brings.
This marks the third year for the men’s lacrosse division of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Syracuse University attack and team captain Mike Leveille took home the award in 2008 and Cornell University goalkeeper Matt McMonagle was the inaugural winner in 2007.
The list of 30 student-athletes will be narrowed down to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot. The ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select the candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the “Four C’s” of Classroom, Character, Community, and Competition.
The award winner will be announced and presented with his trophy at the 2009 NCAA® Men’s Lacrosse Championship in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
