HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth baseball team rebounded after a 7-1 loss in game one to take the nightcap, 9-3, as the Big Green earned a split against Columbia in an Ivy League twin bill on Monday.

The Big Green is now 13-9 overall with a 7-1 record in Ivy play. The Lions move to 5-2 in conference, while posting a 10-16 overall mark.

In game one, Dartmouth got one run on just five hits. Senior Erik Bell (Sierra Madre, Calif.) singled home the lone run for the Big Green as he plated senior Jason Blydell (Nahant, Mass.). Blydell got on base with a double down the right field line for one of Dartmouth’s two extra base hits.

On the mound, sophomore Robert Young (Cleburne, Texas) dropped to 2-2 on the season as he threw all seven innings, giving up 10 hits and seven runs, while fanning one batter.

Columbia got all of its runs in the third and fourth innings, including a five-run fourth highlighted by a two-run double from Henry Perkins to give the Lions the 7-1 victory.

In game two, senior Chase Carpenter (Bartlett, Tenn.) provided the Big Green with a brilliant start, going 8.2 innings, allowing three runs, two of which were earned. He scattered seven hits and only walked one batter. Carpenter earned his third win of the season, which is tied for tops on the team.

Junior Michael Pagliarulo (Winchester, Mass.) continued to swing a hot bat with a 3-for-4 second game with two doubles, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Bell jumped in with two hits, an RBI and a run scored, while sophomore Nick Santomauro (North Caldwell, N.J.) collected two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Dartmouth had hits from eight of the nine batters and at least one RBI from eight hitters as well.

The Big Green jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first as senior co-captain Damon Wright (Dallas, Texas) grounded out to first base, which scored freshman Jeff Onstott (Houston, Texas), who reached on a single up the middle. Pagliarulo then doubled home Santomauro after he doubled following Onstott’s single to make it 2-0 Big Green.

After Columbia added a run in the second and third innings, Dartmouth put a three-spot on the board in the bottom of the third. Santomauro led off the inning with a double and after Wright was hit with a pitch, Pagliarulo doubled to score Santomauro to grab the lead back at 3-2. Blydell and junior Jack Monahan (Overland Park, Kan.) then forced home runs as Blydell was hit by a pitch and Monahan took a walk to make it 5-2 in favor of Dartmouth.

Bell singled home his first run of the game in the sixth inning to give the Big Green a 6-2 lead. Senior Jason McManis (Flower Mound, Texas) tried a sacrifice bunt, but the Lion pitcher threw to second for the out, however, the shortstop fired wide at first which allowed McManis to run for two bases and end up at third. Bell then brought him home to extend the lead.

Dartmouth added three more runs in the final two innings, highlighted by Pagliarulo’s second RBI double in the seventh inning. Carpenter could not earn the complete game, but freshman Ryan Smith (Greenlawn, N.Y.) got the final out on a pop to second base.

Dartmouth will be back in action on Wednesday as the Big Green host Quinnipiac in a non-conference mid-week matchup at 3 p.m. at Red Rolfe Field.
