Dartmouth College righthander Ryan Smith was a dominant starter in high school.

He posted a 13-0 career record in four years at Harborfields High School, including a record of 7-0 his senior year with a 1.24 ERA.

A Newsday first-team All-Long Island selection in 2007, Smith's days as a starter ended the first day he set foot on Dartmouth's campus.

"I was put right into the pen," the junior-to-be said. "I pitched in some close games and after the first couple of weeks, they made me the closer."

The move to the bullpen turned out to be the right one for Smith. His seven saves in 2008 set the Dartmouth record and his 2.25 ERA that season helped earn him second-team All-Ivy honors.
