Dartmouth women's basketball sophomore Brittney Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) is the recipient
of this year's Class of 1976 Award presented to the College's most outstanding
female athlete of the year. Dartmouth Athletics held its annual Celebration of Excellence, at which time the annual department awards are presented. For the Class of 1976 Award, student-athletes are nominated by their coaches and the winner is
selected by the head coaches of the women's varsity teams and the Dean
of Students. Smith was named Ivy
League Player of the Year and a unanimous choice for first team All-Ivy
after earning Ivy Rookie of the Year honors a season ago. In addition,
she was a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association National Player of the
Month Honorable Mention honoree twice. She is a threat at both ends of
the court and played a key role in her team’s Ivy League Championship
this year, which punched the Big Green’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament. A three-time Ivy Player of the Week, Smith averaged 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.4
blocks per game during the Big Green’s run to its 17th Ivy League title. This marks the ninth time since 1977 and third time in the last four that a women's basketball player has received the Class of 1976 Award. Angie Soriaga ’06 was honored in 2006 while Koren Schram ’09 received the award in 2008. |
