John was a four year letter winner in swimming and a two year letter winner in water polo at Cathedral Preparatory School in Pennsylvania. His swim team was District 10 Champions all four years, and State runner up senior year. Individually he was State runner-up his senior year. In high school, John earned several awards. He was named First Team All State, All American in the 4x100m relay, Academic All American, and Cathedral Prep Swimmer of the Year, all his senior year.

John is the son of John and Kim Hll and has one sister.

At Dartmouth John plans on studying Biochemistry and Economics.
