HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth women's crew joined the Princeton Tigers and the Penn Quakers on the Connecticut River this morning in competition for the Class of 1984 Award Plaque. The Big Green could not come away with the award, however, as it fell to Princeton, despite victories over Penn in most of its races.

While the race order was changed at the last minute over concern that conditions would not hold up, the weather cooperated throughout the morning, with clear skies and flat water. However, due to the Wilder Dam being especially active, a galloping tail current led to extremely fast times for the races.

In the varsity eight, Princeton took an early lead, leaving Dartmouth and Penn to battle it out for second place. At the finish line, the Tigers came away with a 5:27.9 win, with Dartmouth in second at 5:35.0.

The second varsity had a similar result, although their margin behind Princeton was much more narrow. The Green held a narrow lead coming into the final spring, but the Tigers stepped it up a notch to pull ahead of Dartmouth in the final ten strokes. The Big Green's 2V finished in second at 5:45.8, just one second behind Princeton.

In the third varsity four races, Dartmouth's A boat saw another tight defeat, this time to Penn. The Green finished in 6:37.8 to Penn's 6:25.1. The Big Green's B boat, on the other hand, saw the only outright win of the day for Dartmouth, beating Penn's B and C boats with a time of 6:25.4.

The women's frosh eight had a finishing order identical to that of the first and second varsities, with Princeton taking first and Dartmouth narrowly edging out Penn for second place with a time of 6:01.7. The 2N four finished third with a time of 6:59.1.

Dartmouth women's crew will remain in Hanover next week to play host to Cornell on May 3. It will be the final dual race of the women's spring season before the EAWRC Sprints on May 18.
