PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) tallied a career-high five goals to lead the Dartmouth field hockey team to its first Ivy League victory of the season with an 8-3 win over Brown on Saturday.
Hood added two scores in the opening half and posted three more in the final half. Four of the five scores came on penalty corners. Classmate Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) recorded her third goal of the season, while junior co-captain Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) posted her second goal of the year and collected four assists for a six-point game.
Junior Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) posted a career-high four assists and classmate Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) had two assists of her own. Freshman Samantha McPherson (Ventura, Calif.) earned her first collegiate score in the win. Sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) pushed aside one shot in 66 minutes of play and freshman Jenna Stearns (Thornton, N.H.) relieved her for the final four minutes in her first appearance for the Big Green.
For Brown (3-4, 0-2 Ivy), Katie Hyland scored twice for the Bears and Leslie Springmeyer added a goal and two assists for four points in the loss. Also recording assists were Michaela Siego with two and Kit Masini with a single assist. Goalkeeper Caroline Washburn made eight saves in the loss for the Bears.
Dartmouth (2-4, 1-1 Ivy) opened play with two scores in first seven minutes. The Big Green converted on its first penalty corner as Hood netted her first of five on the afternoon. Everett pushed the lead to 2-0 on a 2-on-1 breakaway down the field with Sobel and found the net with her third of the year.
Hood scored on another penalty corner 16:32 into the contest to make it 3-0 Big Green. On the corner and adding assists were Peisch and stick-stopper McHenry. Peisch got into the goal-scoring column with her first of the season with 8:54 left in the opening half with the assist going to Sobel. Brown was able to disrupt the initial attack on a penalty corner, but Peisch was able to recover and find the net to make it 4-0.
Brown made a push in the final minutes prior to halftime with two scores in the final seven minutes of the opening half. Hyland got the Bears on the board on a penalty corner and Springmeyer beat Vakiener on a breakaway after a nice pass from Masini, to cut the lead to 4-2 going into the half.
After 20 minutes of scoreless play, Hood got back to business with her third of the game on another corner and added another on the same play six minutes later to increase the Big Green's advantage to 6-2. Peisch and McHenry were given two more assists on the two scoring plays.
Hyland came back for the Bears to cut the lead to 6-3 with her second of the game with the assists going to Springmeyer and Siego.
The Big Green closed out the scoring late in the game as McPherson netted her first collegiate goal, coming unassisted after she collected a rebound in front for the score. Hood recorded her fifth and final score with less than two minutes left to give Dartmouth the 8-3 win. It was her first goal that did not come from a corner.
Dartmouth dominated in the shot column with a 28-11 advantage. The Big Green had many opportunities on penalty corners with 16 on the afternoon to eight for Brown.
Dartmouth will be back in Hanover tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. as the Big Green takes on Bryant at Chase AstroTurf Field.
