Yale Defeats Big Green in 2014 Ivy League Opener

HANOVER, N.H. – The Yale women's lacrosse team defeated Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field in the 2014 Ivy League opener for both teams.

The two traded goals early on in the first half, but after the Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 Ivy) took a 4-3 lead on a Kerri Fleishhacker goal with 3:21 left in the frame, they would never look back, earning the 12-5 win.

For Dartmouth (2-1, 0-1 Ivy), the loss was the first of the season after wins at UNH and at home against UConn to begin the spring.

Yale controlled much of the play throughout, outshooting the Big Green, 31-16. That discrepancy in shots meant senior goalkeeper Kristen Giovanniello would be forced to record a season-high 11 saves in the losing effort.

“I thought Yale deserved to win this game,” head coach Amy Patton said. “They really took it to us in every facet of the game.

“Kristen (Giovaniello) played really well, but we can't win games with just one player. This is something we have to put behind us and learn from as we get ready to play again Wednesday. There are still a lot of games left to be played and the season is still very young,” Patton continued.

Offensively, junior Sarah Byrne continues to be a constant on the scoresheet, recording three goals against the Bulldogs. Byrne leads the team this season with 13 markers in three games and has registered at least a hat trick in the last five games dating back to last May's NCAA Tournament.

Senior Liz Calby chipped in with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Danielle Lisovicz scored the game's first tally.

Fleishhacker was the driving force in Yale's win, scoring five goals and registering seven total points. Additionally, Jen DeVito had three goals and two assists as the Bulldogs snapped a five-game skid to the Big Green with the victory.

Goalkeeper Erin McMullan turned aside eight Dartmouth shots in earning the win.

The visitors possessed the ball for long stretches of time, thanks in large part to their 15-5 advantage in draw controls.

The Big Green will remain at home for their next two games, hosting Boston University Wednesday (3 p.m.) and Albany on Saturday (12 p.m.).
