The Dartmouth men's hockey team will have several incoming freshman for the 2006-07 season that will help the Big Green try to keep the Cleary Cup in Hanover. Dartmouth will welcome five forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender.
The five incoming forwards scored 284 points in 2005-06 with Josh Gillam from Peterborough, Ontario leading the way with 104 points. In 105 games over two seasons with the Peterborough Stars of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League Gillam scored 163 total points (73g, 90a). He finished as the second leading scorer in the league and was selected to play for the East Team in the Canadian Junior 'A' Top Prospects Game. Gillam is ranked 139th by NHL Central for North American skaters. In 2004-05 he was named the OPJAHL's Eastern Conference Rookie of the Year.
TJ Galiardi comes to Hanover from Calgary where he played last season with the Calgary Royals. In two seasons he scored 86 total points, 56 with the Royals and 30 with the Calgary Alberta Midget team. Last season he averaged a point a game finshing top-20 in assists and scoring. Galiardi was invited to participate in the 2006 AJHL All-Star game and the International Viking Cup Tournament that featured AJHL South selects.
Rob Smith also hails from Calgary after playing two seasons with the Calgary Canucks. He saw action in 127 games scoring 64 points (29g, 35a).
Of the final two forwards one is a local player and one is from Canada. Joey Gaudet is no stranger to Dartmouth hockey as he is head coach Bob Gaudet's oldest son. Gaudet graduated from Hanover High School where he led the Marauders to two New Hampshire state titles. He was a three-time member of the New Hampshire All-State Hockey team and was named as the New Hampshire High School Division I Player of the Year. Gaudet spent last season with the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs where he was a member of the team that captured the Eastern Junior Hockey League championship. He scored 35 points last season with the Monarchs.
Andrew Owsiak from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is the second highest scorer coming in. In two years he racked up 157 points (58g, 89a) in 105 games. In one year with Notre Dame he scored 106 and last season with the Okotoks Oilers had 51. He finished 2005-06 as the sixth highest scoring rookie in the Alberta Junior 'A' League. In 2004-05 he was the second highest scorer in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA League and was named the Chuck Herriot Award winner. Owsiak was also a member of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA All-Star team.
On defense Harry Taylor (Toronto, Ont.) and Kevin McCarthy (Stoneham, Mass.) will lend valuable help to the Big Green d-line. Taylor played two seasons with the Saint Mike's Buzzards of the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League while McCarthy played for Stoneham High School and Phillips Exeter Academy. Taylor racked up 56 points in two seasons while McCarthy scored 67.
Defenseman Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) spent last season with Sodertalje of the Swedish Under-20 Elite League. Boldt graduated from the Taft School in Connecticut where he scored seven points his senior year. Last season with Sodertalje he had 10 points in 46 games. While at Taft he was slected to play for Team New England in USA Hockey's Select 16 and 17 Festivals.
In goal Joe Grossman from Foxboro, Mass. will challenge for playing time. Grossman spent the past two seasons with the Waterloo Blackhawks of the U.S. Hockey League. He played in 72 games with a 31-27-5 record while recording a 2.91 GAA and a .900 save percentage.
