Lewinstein Athletic Center

When the Lewinstein Athletic Center (LAC), originally known as “Alumni Gymnasium,” was built in 1909, it was considered to be one of the most complete in the Eastern states.

Within its 129,000 square feet, the LAC contains offices for a majority of the Dartmouth Athletics and Recreation staff, fencing lanes, two swimming pools — including the modern Karl Michael championship pool with bleachers for 400 spectators– and intramural basketball courts located below 1/13 of a mile jogging track in an area now named “Alumni Gym.”

A $12 million renovation to the building, the centerpiece of Dartmouth's athletic complex, was completed in 2005. Included in the renovation was the creation of the 14,000-square foot Zimmerman Fitness Center, eight new multi-use fitness spaces (comprising about 10,000-square feet), infrastructure improvements to Karl Michael Pool, handicap accessibility, and an elevator serving the gym's three levels.

In 2024 this storied building was renamed the “Lewinstein Athletic Center” to honor Diana and Stephen Lewinstein ‘63 P’98 and their generosity and commitment to furthering Dartmouth Athletics and Recreation.
