NEW YORK - In the end, it came down to kicking. Dartmouth missed three field goals and one extra point attempt while Columbia's Nick Rudd made three field goals as the Lions downed the Big Green, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon at Wien Stadium. With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the Ivy League, while Columbia picks up its first victory of the season and improves to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Rudd opened the scoring with a 39-yard field in the first quarter and a 31-yard boot in the second period. Dartmouth gained just 92 yards during the half while Columbia piled up 190 yards of total offense.
The Big Green tied the game late in the third quarter after senior captain Clayton Smith intercepted a pass and returned the ball to the Columbia 27-yard line. After quarterback Charlie Rittgers' two-yard rush, tailback Chris Little had bursts of 10 and 14 yards to get the ball inside the Columbia 1-yard line. Rittgers' quarterback sneak was successful and the Big Green evened the score at 6-6. Erik Hinterbichler missed the PAT and Columbia quickly grabbed the lead back when Rudd hit his third field goal of the game with 13:15 left in the fourth quarter.

Light Blue quarterback Jeff Otis completed 24 of 39 passes for 299 yards, while Rittgers was 19 for 39 for 147 yards. Wideout Bob Murphy had seven receptions for Dartmouth and Wade Fletcher was Otis' favorite target with nine grabs.
Steve Jensen, Josh Dooley and Anthony Gargiulo led the Big Green defense with eight tackles apiece.
The Big Green will be in action again next Saturday, October 30, when it hosts Harvard at Memorial Field.
