HANOVER, N.H. - Although they built an early 13-point lead, the Dartmouth women's basketball team could not overcome a cold shooting perfomance in the second half and fell to Loyola Marymount, 55-46, in the championship game of the Blue Sky Restaurant Group Classic on Friday night at Leede Arena. The Big Green falls to 6-3 on the season while the Lions improve to 6-7.
Junior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) had 14 points, all in the first half, to lead the Dartmouth offense. Senior point guard Angie Soriaga (College Station, Texas) had seven points, seven rebounds and six assists. Both earned spots on the All-Tournament team. For the second straight night, senior forward Krista Perry (Boise, Idaho) matched her career high with nine points and sophomore center Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) pulled down a team-high nine boards.
Dartmouth came out on fire and raced out to a 16-3 lead at the 15:37 mark. The Lions outscored the Big Green 21-4 over the next 10 minutes and led 24-20 after Bianca Ziemann hit a jumper with 5:58 left in the half. They extended the lead to six points, 31-25, on another Ziemann jumper before Taylor hit a layup to make it 31-27 at the break.
The Big Green had a fast start to the second half, scoring the first five points on a three-pointer by Soriaga and a layup by Perry. That gave Dartmouth its last lead of the game at 32-31 with 19:16 left.
Dartmouth made just five more field goals the rest of the way and shot 29.2 percent in the second half (7-of-24) and 34 percent for the game (18-of-53). The team was also 4-of-12 from the free throw line, missing several opportunities down the stretch to cut into the Lions' lead.
LMU was led by Rachael Ziemann, who had 14 points, and Ashlee Dunlap, who grabbed 10 boards.
The Big Green will return to action on Monday, January 2, when it travels to Siena to take on the Saints. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
