Jan. 7, 2006
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Dartmouth (7-8-1, 6-5-1 ECACHL) men's hockey team earned its first tie of the season, skating to a 2-2 tie with Union (10-8-4, 3-3-2 ECACHL) at Messa Rink. The Big Green picked up three league points this weekend after defeating Rensselaer last night, 4-1.
Union struck first at 13:43 in the opening stanza. A shot from the corner by Augie DiMarzo allowed the puck to slip between Dartmouth netminder
Mike Devine's (Orchard Park, N.Y.) outstretched leg.
The Big Green tied things up at 12:21 off a power play strike from
Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.). Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) worked the puck behind the net passing to Lewis who had two shots on goal before finally scoring the equalizer.
Dartmouth pulled ahead early in the second period. Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) had the initial shot on goal with the rebound bouncing out to
Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) who was waiting to pound the puck into the lower left corner of the net for his third goal of the season. After being outshot 11-4 in the first period Dartmouth took the lead and had the advantage, 18-16 after two.
The Dutchmen tied it at 2-2, 4:22 into the final period of play. Brendan Milnamow worked the puck around the corner with Devine saving the shot. Michael Beynon was waiting for the rebound and one-timed the puck for his second goal of the season.
A scoreless extra stanza kept the game knotted and gave Dartmouth its first tie of the season. Devine finished with 19 saves while Union netminder Kris Mayotte had 25. The Big Green ended up with the advantage in shots, 27-21 but went 1-for-8 on power play opportunities.
Dartmouth will be back in action next Saturday in a nonleague contest against in-state rival, New Hampshire. The game will be at 7:00 pm at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester and will be broadcast live on WMUR, Channel 9, the local New Hampshire ABC affiliate.
