HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth's women's hockey team won its season opener this afternoon, downing the Boston University Terriers, 4-3. The Big Green built a three goal lead by the second intermission then held on as the Terriers closed to within one following a power play goal with the goalie pulled.
Freshman Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) got her collegiate career off to an outstanding start, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist in the game. She also won 30 out of 35 faceoffs during the game.
Dartmouth opened the scoring at 6:34 of the first period when junior Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Que.) potted a rebound in front of the net. Senior Danielle Grundy (Kelowna, B.C.) and freshman Katie Gray (Calgary, Alta.) earned assists on the goal. The lead grew to 2-0 when Bowman got her first of the night when she sent a rocket in from the blueline that Boston University goalie Allyse Wilcox got a piece of, but the puck still trickled over the line. Grundy assisted on the goal.
The Big Green took a 3-0 lead at 4:45 of the second period when Bowman netted her second goal of the game. Sophomore Amy Cobb (Edina, Minn.) sent a shot in off an offensive zone faceoff, and Bowman was there to collect the rebound and stuff it home. The Terriers cut into the lead when Caroline Bourdeau scored her first of the night, but Dartmouth added a power play tally with 31 seconds left in the frame when senior captain Tiffany Hagge (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored her first of the season.
The Terriers made it a 4-2 game at 9:51 of the third when Genevieve Laing got one past senior Kate Lane (Wingham, Ont.). Boston then made it a one-goal game when Bourdeau earned her second of the game while Dartmouth had a player in the box at 17:17 of the third, but the Big Green held on for the victory.
Dartmouth finished the game 1-for-11 on the power play, while the Terriers went 1-for-8 with the man advantage. The Big Green outshot the visitors, 44-13.
The Big Green open ECACHL play next weekend when it hosts Princeton and Quinnipiac at Thompson Arena on Friday and Saturday. Game times are 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
