HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth's women's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to three games this afternoon at Thompson Arena, forcing a tie with Connecticut, 1-1. The two teams traded goals in the second period, which proved to be all the scoring for the day.
After a scoreless first, the Huskies got on the board in the second while two Dartmouth skaters were in the box. Jennifer Houlden scored her first of the year for UConn on a rocket from the blueline that eluded Dartmouth netminder Kate Lane (Wingham, Ont.) near the midway point of the game.
At 18:10 of the second, the Big Green answered right off an offensive zone faceoff. Sophomore Nicole Ruta (Pickering, Ont.) won the draw back to the point, where freshman Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.) fired a rocket along the ice and into the net. The goal was Newnam's first in a Dartmouth uniform.
With the two teams knotted, 1-1, Dartmouth (6-7-2) applied the pressure in the third but couldn't get another in the net. Connecticut (8-14-1) was aided by two Dartmouth penalties in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The Big Green outshot the Huskies, 2-1, in the extra five minutes, but it was the visitors with the best scoring chance when Bridget King had a golden chance but knocked it off the post.
Dartmouth outshot UConn, 31-20, for the game, and held the Huskies to just 1-of-6 on the power play. The Big Green failed to score on the team's only power play chance.
The team returns to action next weekend when it travels to Durham, N.H. to face in-state rival New Hampshire. The Wildcats won the first match-up earlier this year, 4-1. Gametime on Friday is 7 p.m.
