HANOVER, N.H. -- Behind a seven-point game from both freshman Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and senior Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.), the Dartmouth women's hockey team rolled over Union, 11-0, in its home opener at Thompson Arena.
In just the fourth minute of play, the Big Green began their onslaught, as senior captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) netted her first goal of the game, ripping a shot from the slot past Union net minder Alex Zirbel. Assists on Apps' goal were credited to Parsons and Piper.
At the 9:58 mark, sophomore Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.) notched her first goal of the season, while on the power play. Freshman Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) recorded her first collegiate point picking up an assist on Bowman's mark.
Just 30 seconds later, Carrie Thompson (Shorewood, Minn.) took a pass from assistant captain Nicole Ruta (Pickering, Ont.) and wristed a shot past Zirbel to give the Big Green a 3-0 lead mid-way through the first period.
In the latter part of the first stanza, Parsons stripped the puck from a Union defender and buried the shot to record her first collegiate goal, and the final tally of the period. The Big Green out shot Union 19-1 in the first.
In the seventh minute of the second period, the Big Green's special teams came out in full-force. Piper, Apps and Parsons worked the puck around the chasing Dutchwomen, before Parsons rifled a shot that bounced off the new Union goalie, Amanda Hanson, and trickled over the line.
Parsons finished off the true hat trick seven minutes later, again on the power play, as she blasted a one-timer to the stick side of Hanson, giving Dartmouth a 6-0 lead. Julia Bronson (Arlington, Va.) and Piper were given the assists.
Three goals weren't enough for the young freshman though, as Parsons buried her fourth straight tally just two minutes later. Marley McMillan (St. Paul, Minn.) and Katie Gray (Calgary, Alta.) aided Parsons in her fourth goal, picking up their first points of the season.
The third period was no different than the first two, as the Big Green kept firing at the Union cage. Piper racked up her first goal of the game, just 26 seconds into the period, as she picked up a long clearing pass from Bronson. Piper juked out Hanson and slide the shot into the right side of the net.
The special teams unit for the Big Green answered one more time for coach Mark Hudak, as Apps roofed a one-timed blast from the right circle off a pass from Parsons to give Dartmouth a 9-0 lead.
Piper tagged her second goal of the game at the 14:49 mark, as she deflected a Bronson shot from the point, through the legs of Hanson. Parsons, again, was given an assist to record her seventh point of the game.
Freshman Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) closed out the scoring for the Big Green, recording her first career goal, when she picked up a rebounded shot and jammed it home for the Big Green. Meredith Batcheller (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) tallied her second assist of the day, and Piper notched her fifth assist and seventh point of the game, on the Cunningham goal.
On the day, Dartmouth out shot the Dutchwomen 41-9, as well as went 4-for-6 on power play chances. Freshman Sarah Kennedy (Jasper, Alta.) recorded her first collegiate start, as well as the shut out in the Big Green's first win of the season.
The women will skate again tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they host Rensselaer in another ECAC league contest at Thompson Arena.
