Dartmouth's
Mike Shannon Earns Nason Award
HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth senior
Mike Shannon (Andover, Mass.), a three-year starter on the Big Green's offensive line, is the 2006 winner of the Nason Award for Senior Achievement.
Shannon will be honored on Thursday, December 14 at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet at Casa di Fior, Wilmington, Mass. The Nason award goes to the senior who has persevered against all odds to succeed in football.
Said Shannon, "I'm proud to accept the Nason award, and I'm grateful to my family, teammates and the Dartmouth community for their unwavering support."
After spring practice in 2004, Shannon was slated to be Dartmouth's starting left tackle. During the summer, a bruise in his calf, the remnant of being kicked at the bottom of a pile during May, became a nagging soft spot. It was the focal point for a bacterial infection of unknown origin that spread throughout his body.
For nearly a month in August, Shannon was hospitalized at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center as he battled what was ultimately diagnosed as necrotizing fascitis and septic shock. Family, teammates and coaches were at his bedside throughout the life-threatening ordeal, and Shannon was finally released on August 25.
The grueling process of rehabilitation and strength conditioning began anew. During the 2004 season, Shannon was on the sidelines for every game, often helping with equipment. In 2005, he returned to the lineup, starting all 10 games at offensive tackle. In 10 games during 2006, he was the Big Green's starter at center. As a sophomore in 2003, Shannon played in all 10 contests, starting the last five.
The Nason award dates back to 1958. Dartmouth's only other recipient is Kevin Case '77, who quarterbacked the 1976 Big Green team.
The New England Football Writers Association annually present a half-dozen major awards. The last Dartmouth player honored was Jon Aljancic '97, quarterback of the undefeated 1996 squad. Aljancic was presented the Harry Agganis Award as the outstanding senior football player.
