HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's volleyball team mounted a comeback in the fifth and final game of the match to defeat the visiting Columbia Lions, 3-2, tonight in Leede Arena. Freshman Amanda Marston (Austin, Texas) led Dartmouth with 30 digs and was one of five players who recorded double-figures in digs.
Dartmouth started the first game off strong taking a small lead and holding off any Columbia rallies. The Lions made it close at the end but the Big Green held on for the 31-29 win. The second game started out with the Lions taking a big lead and Dartmouth playing catch-up. The two battled point-for-point but the Big Green was able to pull ahead and win 30-25. Game Three was all Columbia as the Lions led by as much as 8-1 early on and never trailed, winning, 30-23. The fourth game again had Columbia going ahead early and Dartmouth coming from behind. The Big Green took a slim lead but the Lions battled back, pulling ahead to win, 30-24, forcing a fifth game. The final game had Columbia doing what it had done all night, going ahead early with a large margin. Dartmouth fought back from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game. The two teams traded the lead before the Big Green finally pulled ahead by two, to win 15-12.
Sandy Barbut (Los Angeles, Calif.) led Dartmouth in kills with 16 and had a .212 hitting percentage. Jess Thomas (Tampa, Fla.) and Frances Samolowicz (St. Charles, Ill.) had 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Katie Hirsch (Austin, Texas) was tops for both teams with 54 sets while Thomas, Hirsch, Barbut and Brittany Agee (Phoenix, Ariz.) all had double-digit digs. Outblocking and outhitting the Big Green, Columbia was led by Amalia Viti with 22 kill.
The win improves Dartmouth's record to 11-10 overall and 5-6 in the Ivy League while Columbia falls to 7-14 overall, 1-10 Ivy. Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow at 4:00 pm, facing league leader, Cornell.
