DURHAM, N.H. – In a battle of in-state rivals the No. 6 Dartmouth women's hockey team and the No. 3 University of New Hampshire skated to a 3-3 tie Sunday afternoon at the Whitemore Center. Big Green freshman Sarah Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) was the hero for Dartmouth as she recorded the tying goal with under a minute to play in the final period. Dartmouth is now 10-3-1 on the season while UNH is 14-2-3.
Dartmouth lit the lamp first in the opening frame. At 15:45 three straight shots on goal resulted in a power play strike by Caroline Ethier (Matagami, Que.), the senior's fourth of the season. Sarah Newnam (Lexington, Ky.) took the first shot with Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) there for a rebound and shot before Ethier got the puck in.
Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) gave the Big Green a two-point lead at 11:26. The Dartmouth captain brought the puck down after receiving a pass from Shannon Bowman (Leamington, Ont.). Apps went one-on-one with UNH netminder Melissa Bourdon sneaking the puck over the line on Bourdon's glove side.
The Wildcats got one back less than five minutes later when Martine Garland was able to take advantage of a prone Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.). Clemis had made a diving save only to leave the puck free on the open side of the net with Garland there for the put back.
The Wildcats tied the score at 2-2 with a little over five minutes to play in the second period. Steph Holmes passed across ice to Courtney Sheary who was waiting on the right side of the net. Sheary faked Clemis out of the net and then slapped the puck into the hole on the left side.
UNH took the lead at 1:51 after Jennifer Hitchcock was able to shoot the puck in on Clemis' stick side. The Wildcats finished the period outshooting the Big Green 19 to 3.
The two teams were pretty even in the third period with both having several chances. The Big Green's Toupal recorded the tying goal with her second career strike with just :34 seconds left in the game. Dartmouth had pulled Clemis for the extra skater as Meredith Batcheller (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) had her initial shot blocked. Apps was there to put another shot on net as Toupal got her stick down for the tip-in.
The Big Green continued the pressure recording two shots on net and with one hitting the pipe in the early minutes of the overtime but neither team could get the winning goal.
UNH outshot Dartmouth 37 to 29 as Clemis tied her career-high with 34 saves, Bourdon saved 26 for the Wildcats.
The Big Green returns home on Dec. 15 for an ECAC Hockey League matchup with Harvard in Thompson Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
