Dartmouth Men's Hockey Comes From Behind to Defeat Yale 6-4
Feb. 3, 2006
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team (10-10-1, 8-5-1 ECACHL) came from three goals down to defeat the Yale Bulldogs (7-12-3, 7-7-2 ECACHL), 6-4, tonight at Ingalls Rink.
Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) notched his team-leading third game winner late in the third period.
The first 20 minutes was all Yale as the Bulldogs put three goals on the scoreboard and held Dartmouth scoreless. The Elis, still smarting from a 9-4 pasting by the Big Green earlier in the year, scored very quickly into the contest.
Three straight shots on Dartmouth netminder
Mike Devine allowed Jean-Francois Boucher to sneak the puck past Devine when he was out of position for Yale's first score at 18:40. Then at 12:55 Devine made the save behind him only to have Matt Cohen fire a slapshot from the point to put the Bulldogs up, 2-0. Yale's final strike of the stanza came on the power play when Michael Karwoski fired from the point to David Meckler who was waiting at the left side of the net.
Dartmouth had its chances as
Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.),
Mike Ouellette (Kamloops, B.C.) and Eric Przepiorka (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) all had point-blank shots stopped by red-hot goaltender Alec Richards. Yale ended the period outshooting Dartmouth, 16-6.
The Big Green found its shot in the second stanza, outshooting Yale, 26-4 and outscoring the Bulldogs, 2-0. Dartmouth got on the scoreboard at 15:54 when
J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Mich.) and Przepiorka set up
Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) with a feed from behind the net. Then at 11:26
Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) sent a slow feed across the middle to Przepiorka who was waiting to fire it in for Dartmouth's second goal of the stanza. Wyman also assisted. The Big Green had a chance to tie the score but Yale killed off Dartmouth's 5-on-3 opportunity late in the period.
The Big Green tied the game at 3-all at 14:18 in the final period of play. Shields got the puck at center ice, skating in all alone one-timing the puck over Richards shoulder. Then
Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) pulled Dartmouth ahead at 13:43 when Ouellette passed the puck in from the right side circle and Glass fired top-shelf on Richards. But less than a minute later Yale's Brad Mills faked low on Devine and shot high to notch the tying goal.
Dartmouth pulled ahead at 3:51 with its first power play of the game. A streaking Glass played give-and-go with Ouellette before the senior captain fired the puck into the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season. Devine also assisted for his second of the season. Dartmouth put the game away with less than a minute to go as Jarrett Sampson (Prince Albert, Sask.) scored an empty-netter to give the Big Green the 6-4 win.
Devine finished the game with 28 saves. Dartmouth had a season-high 49 shots on goal as Richards saved 43 of those. This is the first game in which the Big Green has come-from-behind this season to win and the first time that Dartmouth has won when the opponent has scored first.
The Big Green travels to Providence to face Brown tomorrow night in a 7:00 pm matchup.
