NEW HAVEN, Conn. - For the second straight year it took a playoff, but once again, the Dartmouth women's basketball team has emerged victorious and has earned a trip to the NCAA tournament. Dartmouth (23-6) defeated Princeton 63-48 on Sunday afternoon at the John J. Lee Amphitheater on the campus of Yale University.
"We're delighted to be going to the NCAAs again," said Dartmouth head coach Chris Wielgus. "I'm so proud of my team. They just love the game and they were determined not to go down today."
The senior trio of Jeannie Cullen (Janeville, Wis.), Krista Perry (Boise, Idaho) and Angie Soriaga (College Station, Texas) led the way for the Big Green. Cullen tossed in 17 points, while Perry added 14 points and nine rebounds. Soriaga chipped in 13 points and three assists. Princeton (21-7) was led by Becky Brown who had 19 points and eight boards.
After the Tigers had grabbed a 17-16 lead with 8:48 to go in the first half, the Big Green went on a 15-3 run to end the period. Dartmouth limited Princeton to just two field goals in the last 11 minutes of the half. The Big Green had 10 assists and six turnovers in the half, while the Tigers had five assists and 14 turnovers in the period.
Dartmouth led 31-20 at the break, but Princeton scored the first six points to cut the gap to 31-26 after a three-pointer by Katy O'Brien. Princeton got as close as three points at 41-38 after Meaghan Cowher hit a jumper with 9:56 left, but Dartmouth responded with a 14-4 run to take a 55-42 lead with 3:04 left.
Princeton went on a 6-0 spurt to cut the deficit to 55-48 with 1:05 left, but Dartmouth hit 8-of-9 free throws to secure the victory.
