NEW YORK - The Dartmouth women's basketball team survived a 70-65 overtime scare from the Columbia Lions and then received news that Princeton had defeated Brown, putting the Big Green back in control of its own fate in the Ivy League title chase. The Tigers, Bears and Big Green now all have two losses in conference play.
Senior point guard Angie Soriaga (College Station, Texas) had 19 points, all in the second half and overtime to lead Dartmouth and senior Krista Perry (Boise, Idaho) pulled down a career high 17 rebounds and chipped in 10 points. Columbia was led by Michele Gage who had 25 points.
Dartmouth trailed by four in overtime with 2:29 left after Gage hit her seventh three-pointer of the game, but Soriaga answered on the next possession to cut the gap to one at 63-62. Sarah Beato hit a bucket in the lane for Columbia, but junior Fatima Kamara answered for the Big Green with a driving layup with 1:35 left.
Soriaga stole the ball from Gage on the next possession and then buried a jumper to give Dartmouth a 66-65 edge with 56 seconds remaining. Columbia misfired on its next trip down the floor and the Big Green milked the shot clock before sophomore Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) drained a jumper from the baseline with nine seconds left to give Dartmouth a 68-65 advantage. Columbia committed a costly turnover on the inbounds play and then was forced to foul Soriaga. She hit both free throws to secure the Dartmouth win.
Kamara finished with 14 points off the bench and Scott had 10 points and seven boards. Dartmouth had a 53-35 rebounding edge on Columbia.
The Big Green will be in action again on Saturday, March 4, when it visits Cornell. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
