New England Basketball Hall of Fame Honors Six with Dartmouth Ties
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Six men and women with ties to Dartmouth basketball, including four graduates, will be inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame.
The ceremony takes place on Friday, October 6 at the University of Rhode Island's Ryan Center.
Headlining the group are five former players. The most recent graduate is Courtney Banghart '00, a catalyst on the Big Green's 1998-99 and 1999-2000 Ivy title teams. A first team All-Ivy guard and team MVP both years, she is entering her fourth season as an assistant coach for Dartmouth women's basketball. From Amherst, N.H., she is being inducted under the banner of New Hampshire High School Female Player having played at Souhegan HS.
Brian Burke '84 will be honored as a Rhode Island High School Male Player. Co-captain of the 1983-84 squad, he earned first team All-Ivy recognition and team MVP honors as a senior. The Associated Press voted him honorable mention All-America. He was a three-time All-State player at Pilgrim HS in Warwick, R.I. As a baseball pitcher, he was featured in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd in August 1980.
Being inducted in the Dual category as a player and a coach is Bill Raynor '74, a former All-America at Catholic Memorial High in West Roxbury, Mass. Raynor went on to captain the 1973-74 Dartmouth team and was the Ivy League's sophomore of the year in 1971-72. Prior to a five-year tenure as head coach at Holy Cross, Raynor served as an assistant at Harvard and Brown.
Gene Booth '57 was an outstanding guard for Coach Doggie Julian's basketball teams at Dartmouth from 1954-57. Booth was regarded as one of the Green's finest defensive players who Julian usually assigned to cover the opponent's most dangerous scorer. That was never more important than in the opening game of the 1956 NCAA Tournament when Booth effectively shut down Rod Hundley of West Virginia. Hundley came into the game averaging more than 29 points per game but didn't manage a shot in the final eight minutes. Dartmouth won in overtime, 61-59, at Madison Square Garden. Dartmouth lost to Canisius, 66-58, in the second round of the East Regional. Booth is being honored for the category of Semi-Professional.
Lawrence F. (Whitey) Killick, USMC, came to Dartmouth from the University of Vermont in 1943 as a U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) trainee during World War II. He was a forward on the Dartmouth basketball team during the 1943-44 season, playing in 13 games and averaging 10.0 points per game. Because of service, he left the team in February and was not a participant as the Big Green advanced to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament in March 1944, losing to Utah in the title game. Following service in World War II, Killick returned to the University of Vermont where he is regarded as one of the finest basketball players in Catamount history. He is being inducted as a Division I College Male Player.
Finally, Louise O'Neal, senior associate director of athletics at Dartmouth from 1979-89, is scheduled for induction as a Division II College Women's Coach. She retired as athletic director at Wellesley College in June 2006 after more than four decades as a teacher, coach and administrator. A pioneer in women's basketball, she coached nationally successful teams at Southern Connecticut State University from 1962-76, reaching the Final Four four times.
The ceremony begins with a reception for inductees and immediate family members at the Institute for International Sport, followed by a dinner and awards ceremony at the Ryan Center.
The latter is open to the public and tickets can be purchased by calling Dr. Malcolm MacKenzie (401) 874-2673 or by visiting www.internationalsport.com/basketball/bhof_ticket.cfm
