TROY, N.Y. – A four-goal first period bolstered a balanced scoring attack as the Dartmouth men's hockey team defeated Rensselaer, 6-2 in ECAC Hockey League action on Saturday in Houston Field House.
With the win Dartmouth improves to 6-7-2 overall and 5-5-2 in the ECACHL. The Engineers fall to 5-9-6, 1-7-0 ECACHL. The Big Green escaped the Capital Region with two important league points on the weekend.
T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) put the Big Green ahead very quickly, just :57 into the game. Grant Lewis (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) battled for the puck in Dartmouth's end pushing it up to Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) at center ice. Johnson passed to Galiardi who came streaking down the right side of the ice with the freshman firing top-shelf on RPI netminder Mathias Lange.
Dartmouth went up 2-0 at 14:43. Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) passed to Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) in the Rensselaer zone. Shribman fired over to Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) as the sophomore went glove side on Lange.
David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) gave the Big Green its first power play goal in six games and put Dartmouth ahead, 3-0 at 11:28 in the first. Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) and Lovejoy both assisted.
Galiardi notched another power play strike after winning the face off and passing up to Mike Hartwick (Bedford, N.H.) on the blue line. Hartwick passed back down to Galiardi in front of the net for the freshman's seventh goal and Hartwick's first points of the season.
The Engineers came out firing in the second period as Rensselaer was on a 5-on-3 power play. With the Big Green down two men, Jonathan Ornelas took advantage of a flurry of shots slipping the puck past Dartmouth goalie Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.).
Jones and Lovejoy connected on the Big Green's fifth goal of the game, another power play strike with 1:00 left in the second stanza. Lovejoy took the first shot that was blocked, Jones was there for the rebound, lifting the puck over RPI goalie Jordan Alford's glove hand.
Glass picked up his first goal of the game. Just 2:48 minutes into the final period of the contest Jones and Glass played give-and-go on a Big Green power play to give Dartmouth four extra man strikes for the game.
A 5-on-3 power play opportunity for the Engineers with a minute left in the game gave Rensselaer two goals. Jake Luthi scored with just 14.7 seconds left in the contest.
Dartmouth is back in action next week with four nonconference games on tap. The Big Green will face New Hampshire on Jan. 13 at the Verizon Wireless Arena at 7:00 pm before taking on Holy Cross (Jan. 16), Canisius (Jan. 19) and Sacred Heart (Jan. 20), all at home.
