CANTON, N.Y. ? Seniors Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.), J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) and Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) carried the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence on Friday at Appleton Arena. The victory was the Big Green's first over the Saints in three games and the first in Canton since Dartmouth's six seniors were freshmen.
The Saints started the period with pressure early but the Big Green had its chances as Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) was denied a point-blank shot early in the frame. Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) also had a chance to put Dartmouth on the board but Kain Tisi in net for SLU was up to the challenge.
St. Lawrence grabbed the lead on a power play goal at 8:39 of the first. Traffic in front of the net allowed Kevin DeVergilio to slip one past Devine, wrapping it around the Big Green netminders leg on the left side of the cage. SLU went into the break with a slight advantage in shots, 12 to 11.
Dartmouth evened the score on a laser shot by Johnson at 18:30 in the second period. Wyman took an initial shot from the point, drawing Tisi out to the left side of the net as the puck rebounded out to Johnson on the left side boards. The windup by Johnson didn't even allow Tisi to move back into the net as the Big Green got on the board with its second power play goal of the season.
An odd-man rush almost had Wyman and Johnson pairing up for another one but the puck sailed just wide. The Saints also missed an opportunity of its own as Devine made one of his best saves of the night. Jordan Hack took a shot directly in front of the net as Devine came out of his crouch to snag the puck from slipping in under the crossbar.
Wyman gave the Big Green a one-goal lead with 3:40 left to play in that frame. Fleming won the faceoff in the SLU end in front of the home bench, shooting up to Wyman on the blueline as the senior deeked around a defender coming in alone on Tisi firing into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Devine continued to keep his team in the game as DeVergilio and Zach Miskovic paired up for a shot that had the Dartmouth senior sprawling for a leg save that kept the Big Green on top.
The final two minutes of the game had SLU buzzing around the Dartmouth nets as the Saints attempted to tie the score. Devine and the Big Green were up for the challenge as Dartmouth held on for the win.
Devine finished with 29 saves and is now 2-0 on the season. Tisi had 22 saves and falls to 0-2. SLU finished with the advantage in shots, 30-24.
The 2-0 Big Green (1-0 ECAC) travel to Potsdam, N.Y. for a 7:00 pm matchup on Saturday against Clarkson (5-2, 2-0 ECAC), winners over Harvard on Friday.
