New York ? The Dartmouth women's basketball team won its second straight with a gritty 53-45 defeat of Columbia this evening. The Big Green swept its Ivy road weekend to improve to 9-10 (3-2 Ivy) while the Lions dropped to 4-16 (0-6 Ivy).
The Big Green asserted itself early in the contest, taking a 10-4 lead by the 15:35 mark. The Lions' defense got going, however, and they held Dartmouth without a field goal for nearly seven minutes before Darcy Rose (Fort Collins, Colo.) made a nice move in the paint to make it 15-12, Columbia at 8:56.
Dartmouth cranked it up offensively for the balance of the half including back-to-back triples by senior Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) who made it 26-21 Dartmouth at 2:03. Taylor got it going after a three-game skid in which she had not made a three-pointer. Columbia's Caitlin Stachon hit a pair of free-throws before junior Kristen Craft (Marshalltown, Iowa) made a nifty spin move for Dartmouth's final score of the half to go up 28-23.
Columbia opened the second half strong, going on a 10-1 run to take a 33-29 lead before Syndey Scott (Houston, Texas) hit a layup at 13:42 to cut it to 33-31. Both teams traded buckets during the next few minutes before Fatima Kamara (Carrollton, Texas) put Dartmouth up for good, 40-39 at 7:36.
The Big Green got rolling for the balance of the game, going on an 11-2 run until Brittney Carfora nailed a three with 46 seconds left to take it to 51-45, Dartmouth. Dartmouth played stellar defense for the balance of the game to ice the win.
Taylor finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals while Scott had a double-double on 12 rebounds and 10 points. Craft added eight points and three assists in 37 minutes of work.
Carfora and Danielle Browne each had 11 points to pace the Lions.
Dartmouth returns home next weekend when it hosts Penn and Princeton in a pair of Ivy contests.
