ALBANY, N.Y. – For the second night in a row the Dartmouth men's hockey team had the game decided late in the contest as St. Lawrence scored the go-ahead goal with nine minutes left in the game and added an empty netter with eight seconds on the clock to win, 5-3. The Big Green ended the season with an 18-12-3 record while SLU improved to 23-13-2.
The Big Green jumped on the board first with a minute left in the opening frame after a slap shot by Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.). SLU's Drew Bagnall turned the puck over on the left side of the net as David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) there to pass back to Johnson who skated down and whipped his arm back to one-time the puck into the back of the net.
The Big Green then tallied a power play goal just minutes into the second period to go up, 2-0. Johnson won the faceoff cleanly in the right circle, passing back to T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) in front of the net with the freshman blasting the puck toward the net as Jones got his stick down in time for the tip-in.
The Saints ended the shutout at 13:13 on a Dartmouth delayed penalty call. SLU netminder Alex Petizian just got to the bench as Kevin DeVergilio lifted the puck through traffic and over Big Green goalie Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.).
With less than a minute gone the Saints tied the game at 2-2. Increased St. Lawrence pressure in front of the Dartmouth net allowed lots of bodies to block Devine's view as the puck squirted out to Mike McKenzie at the left side of the cage for the tying goal.
The Big Green reclaimed the lead at 9:05 off a big goal by J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.). Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) intercepted a Saint pass at the blue line passing across ice to Galiardi. The rookie skated in passing across the front of the net to Wyman who shot behind Petizian.
SLU scored their third at 7:40 to tie the game for a second time. Mark Wallman pulled Devine out of the net to the left, passing over to Jeremiah Cunningham who shot into the empty side.
St. Lawrence ended the period outshooting the Big Green, 16-9 and held a 30-19 advantage after the first two frames.
The Saints took their first lead of the game with 8:33 left in the contest. A shot by McKenzie was saved by Devine who cleared it up to the right side circle with Drew Bagnall there to one-time it down and in.
With Devine pulled in favor of the extra skater the Big Green's Lovejoy hit the post and narrowly missed the right side of the net before SLU's Max Taylor put the capper on the night potting an empty net goal with eight seconds left in the game.
Devine finished the night with 37 saves and had a season record of 17-12-3. Petizian finished with 24 saves and the freshman goalie's season will continue as the top-seeded Saints will most likely move onto the NCAA Tournament.
