SPECIAL YOGA WORKSHOP
Stand on Your Own Two Feet
In a season of renewal, how do we nourish our roots as we strive to grow? How can we look back in order to move forward? As we rise from the slumber of winter, this workshop will explore how the standing poses teach us to find our sources of strength and self-reliance.
Journey * Discover * Breathe * Move * Transform
Begin the Journey. Follow your own path to fulfillment and freedom. The destination is inside. Discover your strength and your spirit in grounded practice. See your life in a new perspective. Breathe. Let your breath teach you to be present in the moment as it guides you to a safe, balanced practice. Move with the clarity of precise alignment. Flow through the poses and find your beginning, middle, and end. Transform yourself. Break habits. Open new doors. Change the moment; the day; the world.
This workshop is open to everyone eager to renew their commitment to themselves and to the world. Contact FLIP at 646-3903 or HSM@Dartmouth.Edu

Yoga Style Definitions
Yoga is the practice of expanding awareness. All yoga classes are concerned with asana and pranayama, or posture and breath, bringing awareness to the body in order to strengthen and detoxify and to the breath as a means to increase energy and calm the fluctuations of the mind. What differentiates yoga classes is simple the style in which the yoga is delivered. The following list is a description of each school of yoga offered through the FLIP Program.
The ASHTANGA form of yoga is based on six series of postures. The most commonly taught are the “Primary” and “Second” Series. All poses are followed by counter-poses and each series prepares the body for the next. The Primary Series is designed to strengthen, realign and detoxify the body. The Second Series is designed for “nerve Purification” or toning of the nervous system. Ashtanga is also referred to as “Power Yoga” for its reputation as an athletic, heat-building practice. A traditional ashtanga primary series class is a fast-moving flow of poses with a connecting movement, or vinyasa, between each pose. The FLIP program offers an introductory primary series class to teach the basics to those new to yoga and a traditional primary series class for students who have been practicing for a while.
VINYASA is often translated as “flow” and is the name given to the western yoga style derived from the Ashtanga tradition. Vinyasa is a vigorous style of practice like Ashtanga but with more creative freedom permitted in the sequencing of the poses. The instructor designs the sequence of poses and connects them through the action of vinyasa, or flowing movement.
HATHA yoga is defined by precision of alignment in all poses and used props, such as blocks, bolsters and straps to aid students in modifying poses to suit their individual needs. This is a slower paced form of practice as time is needed to set up props and refine alignment. Poses are traditionally held for longer than in the ashtanga or vinyasa styles.
ANUSARA is a life-affirming and heart-centered style of hatha yoga developed by John Friend in 1997. Anusara's uplifting philosophy is supported by the elegant and healing "Universal Principles of Alignment". In all of our classes students of all levels of ability and yoga experience are honored for their unique differences, limitations, and talents. Anusara classes are taught by certified teachers and Anusara-inspired teachers dedicated to the process of becoming Anusara certified.
Anusara Inspired Yoga
This class will build up to more challenging poses including arm balances, backbends and inversions. The class will progress offering more refinements and plenty of fun! (Basic Hatha Yoga experience is helpful.)
Laurie Greenberg has practiced yoga for 17 years. She was certified by David Swenson in Ashtanga Yoga in 2004. Laurie then began studying Anusara in 2005 and was certified as an "Anusara Inspired" instructor in 2007. She continues toward full certification. Her background as a Nurse Practitioner allows her to bring this knowledge of biomechanics into the practice along with the philosophy and heart opening principles of Anusara Yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga
Ashtanga I: Introduction to the Primary Series
This is an introduction to the Ashtanga tradition of yoga asana which is a vigorous practice that challenges muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and balance. The Primary Series, also known as "yoga therapy", is a sequence of poses specifically designed to realign and strengthen the body, eliminate toxins from the tissues and train the mind to stay focused. Emphasis is on awareness of alignment and the subtle breathing technique known as ujjayi pranayama. At least one term of the introductory class is recommended before entering the Traditional Practice (see below).
Open to all levels of experience.

A traditional practice incorporates the Sanskrit invocation, the full primary series, ujjayi pranayama and bandhas. Students are expected to have worked on basic alignment and ujjayi pranayama as taught in the introductory primary series course before entering the traditional practice. This class is taught at a faster pace with the emphasis shifting from alignment to the subtler practices of breath and bandhas. Work from the Second Series will be introduced toward the end of the term.

In this class, we will weave together the common thread of the ancient practice of yoga and the fluidity and freedom of contemporary movement. Working from our center, we will explore balance and resistance and find the power of being fully grounded. Precise alignment and the rhythm of the breath will focus and refine our attention. As we move through space, our heightened attention helps us listen to our bodies and hear those around us. We focus our energies and are fully committed to each movement, each moment. The music, the space, and the energy of those in it, inspire and reconnect us with the joy of dancing. We move into stillness by ending with deep stretching which brings us to a state of calmness and relaxation.
