Hanover, N.H. ? After a tremendous senior season, Dartmouth's Ashley Taylor (Cookeville, Tenn.) has been named Ivy League Women's Basketball Player of the Year and earned unanimous All-Ivy first team accolades.
Three other Dartmouth players earned All-Ivy recognition as junior forward Sydney Scott (Houston, Texas) was named to the second team, sophomore guard Koren Schram (Batesville, Ark.) received honorable mention and freshman forward Margaret Smith (Fort Worth, Texas) was named to the all-rookie team. Dartmouth's four selections are the most for any Ivy League school this season.
Taylor becomes the seventh Dartmouth player to be named Ivy League Player of the Year and first since Betsy Gilmore '94 won it after the 1993-94 championship season. This marks the tenth Ivy Player of the Year selection in Big Green history, as Gail Koziara '82 and Liz Walter '88 each won multiple times. With Taylor's first-team selection, Dartmouth now has 31 in its history, the most of any team in the Ancient Eight.
Taylor earned her fourth All-Ivy selection after a stellar senior year in which she averaged 17.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game. The well-rounded guard also had a team-high 23 blocked shots and shot an impressive 81.9 percent from the free-throw line. Taylor ranked in the top-10 in the Ivy League in 10 different statistical categories and was named Ivy League Player of the Week three times. She scored in double-figures 22 times and hit 20 points in 12 games.
With 1,411 career points, Taylor became the only player in Dartmouth history to amass at least 1,000 points, 450 rebounds (496) and 300 assists (323). The 5-11 guard ranks on 13 different career and single-season top-10 lists and owns the school record for free-throws made in a game, season and career. She currently ranks seventh in career scoring and is just 12 points shy of sixth place (1,423 points), which is occupied by assistant coach Courtney Banghart '00.
Scott made her way onto the All-Ivy second team after averaging 9.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game and tallying six double-doubles. The 6'0" forward stepped up her play in the latter part of the season, averaging 10.9 points and 8.7 rebounds while shooting a conference-best 55.5 percent from the floor in league play. This is the second Ivy honor for the junior, who was named to the All-Rookie team as a freshman in 2004-05.
Schram earned All-Ivy honorable mention after a break-out season. The sophomore sniper averaged 10.8 points per game including a league-best 2.3 three-point field goals per contest. She scored in double-figures 16 times, bursting onto the scene after injuries had limited her freshman year to just 15 appearances and 16 total points.
Smith had a solid rookie campaign for the Big Green, providing 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 points per game off the bench. She played 20.5 minutes per game and also tallied 22 steals and 10 blocks as a force on both ends of the court. She becomes the 10th player in Dartmouth history to earn All-Rookie accolades since the inception of the award in 1996.
The Big Green (15-13/9-5) finished second in the Ivy League and have received a bid to the Women's NIT, which will be played starting March 14. Pairings and game sites will be announced on Monday, March 12.
