HANOVER, N.H. ? With the 2007 football season just around the corner, Dartmouth has announced its captains. Seniors Justin Cottrell (Somers Point, N.J.), Ian Wilson (Burbank, Calif.), Jared Dowdakin (Winnebago, Ill.) and Taylor Layman (Brentwood, Tenn.) will be called upon to lead the Dartmouth squad.
Cottrell led the team in tackles last season, making a career-high 95 stops from the linebacker position. The senior also recorded three sacks, and recovered a fumble in the third game of the season. Cottrell currently has an active games-played streak of 26.
Last year's runner-up in tackles was Wilson who capped off the year right behind Cottrell on the list making 89 stops. As a strong safety, Wilson led the team his sophomore season making 90 tackles, 44 of them solo. A regular in the Big Green backfield, Wilson was named to the Ivy League's second team in 2006.
A member of the Big Green's offensive line, Dowdakin and his group held their opponents to just 24 sacks in 2006. In his sophomore season, Dowdakin, the two-year starter, played both center and offensive guard.
Also lining up on the offensive side of the ball, Layman has played in 22 collegiate games for the Big Green. As a versatile center and offensive guard for his first three seasons, Layman has protected his quarterback against several opponents.
The four will lead their team into action on September 15, for the season opener against Colgate University at Memorial Field.
