Hanover -- There's a tight end at Dartmouth who owes his football career to what he can only describe as a miracle and watched helplessly three years ago as a hurricane ravaged his family's home and community.
But seriously, what's up with that name, Carroll Papajohn?
“People see my credit card or my ID and they say, ?Papajohn? You own the pizza place?' ” said the sophomore yesterday at the end of the Big Green's second day of fall practice. “Sometimes I play along and say, ?Yeah, I own the pizza place.' It's a great icebreaker.”
Luckily, the Gulf Breeze, Fla., native has an expansive sense of humor. It's Greek from his father's side, Papajohn explained (“papa” is Latin for pope, further derived from the Greek “pappas”).
That's not the only place where the pizza connection ends. Instead of delivering the goods this season, Papajohn hopes to be receiving them, or at least protecting those who dole them out.
As a freshman, Papajohn made nary a peep in five varsity appearances. His big splashes, instead, came in the junior varsity games, where Papajohn averaged 28.6 yards on 10 receptions. For a tight end, that average is not of this planet.
