Teevens Optimistic Despite Ivy League Football Media Poll
NEW HAVEN, Conn. ? Third-year Dartmouth football coach
Buddy Teevens remains optimistic about this year's edition of the Big Green, despite the Ivy League football media poll released today at the annual gathering of coaches and media.
The event was hosted by Yale University at the Yale Golf Course.
Dartmouth, Brown and Columbia -- who tied for sixth last year with 2-5 records -- were just points away from each other in bottom half of the 2007 media poll. The Lions were sixth with 44 points, the Bears seventh with 33 and the Big Green eighth with 28.
"The only poll that matters to us is the one at the end of the season," said Teevens. "Our players will read this, and from a League standpoint, that's how the media views Dartmouth football. As a group, Dartmouth football needs to address this. We'll present this to our players and they are intelligent young men. It will provide more inspiration and motivation."
Yale shared the 2006 title with Princeton and was an easy favorite to repeat with 125 points and 14 first place votes. Penn was second with 102 points and one first-place nod, and Harvard third with 95 points, one first-place vote.
The Tigers were fourth with 87 points and Cornell fifth with 62.
Yale, in search of back-to-back titles for the first time since 1979 and 1980, returns ten All-Ivy selections, including four first teamers.
Teevens is pleased with the approach his players are taking toward the 2007 season. "The attitude, preparation and work ethic have been tremendous," he said. "We're focused solely on what we do and how we do it. The media and the pollsters don't see my guys and they don't see what we are doing."
The Big Green opens the season on September 15, hosting non-conference rival Colgate at Memorial Field.
