Dartmouth Men's Hockey Wins Big Over Clarkson

HANOVER, N.H. ? Freshman Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) potted the game winner midway through the final period as the Dartmouth men's hockey team took a 3-1 league victory over No. 11 Clarkson at Thompson Arena on Friday. Senior J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) led the Big Green in scoring with one goal and two assists.

"This was a big win for us, but I almost don't need to say that," said head coach Bob Gaudet. "The boys played hard, this was a solid 60 minutes of hockey. Clarkson is a very good team, they're a national caliber team so we needed to play well to beat them."

Dartmouth almost got on the board in the waning minutes of the first period as the Big Green was on the power play, Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) shot wide with Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) there for the rebound as the freshman's shot hit the post. The two teams ended the first with no score.

Freshman Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) hit the post to start the second period as classmate Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) took a shorthanded shot midway through the stanza. Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) finally gave his team the lead at 9:16 on a goal that brought the house down. Wyman carried the puck down passing to Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) at the slot. Johnson dangled the puck for Grecu as the senior waited for Clarkson netminder David Leggio to commit before stuffing it home.

The Knights tied the game at 1-1 on a power play strike at 7:11 in the final period of play. Steve Zalewski scored his team-high 9th goal of the season on a shot from the top of the right circle.

Stephens had a chance to pull his team ahead after his shot was saved, careening off the crossbar behind the net minutes later. But it was Reeds that broke the tie. His initial shot was blocked as the puck landed on Stephens stick as he came around to net to find Wyman on the wing. Wyman took a shot that was redirected with Reeds' fourth goal of the season.

Wyman gave his team some insurance with an empty net strike with less that :50 to play.

Dartmouth improves to 6-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the ECAC, snapping a three-game skid. Clarkson falls to 11-7-1, 6-3-0 ECAC. Big Green netminder Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) picked up his fifth win of the season, making 36 saves. With the victory Devine takes over sole possession of second place on the Dartmouth career charts with 41 wins. Golden Knight goalie Leggio finished with 32 saves as he falls to 11-6-1.

The Big Green will be back in action on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. against St. Lawrence. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
