BOSTON, Mass. ? J.T. Wyman was the hero for the Big Green as he potted the game winner with less than two minutes to play in the contest as Dartmouth took a 3-2 win over BU on Tuesday at Agganis Arena.
Boston University seemed to control the play early in the opening before Rob Pritchard had Dartmouth's first shot on goal at 15:56 as BU's Brett Bennett was able to make an easy save. Bryan Ewing had a great chance to pull the home team ahead as he wrapped the puck around the right post but Big Green netminder Mike Devine made a sprawling leg save.
In the waning minutes of the period BU's Dan McGoff had a shot ring off the top of the cross bar as the Big Green was able to keep the Terriers from netting one despite being outshot, 9-3.
Rob Smith (Brooks, Alta.) got Dartmouth on the scoreboard 5:24 into the period. Linemate Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) was able to help possess the puck off the faceoff as Smith stole it behind the net, moving backward and wrapping around the right post for a 1-0 lead.
BU got it back at 13:44 on almost the same play at the other end. Luke Popko brought the puck around as Devine went prone to make the save. Jason Lawrence was there to lift the puck over Devine's feet for the equalizer.
The Terriers took the lead at 9:12 off a shot by Bryan Ewing that went top shelf on Devine as BU took a 2-1 lead.
Dartmouth's Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) almost got it back for the Big Green as the freshman got two shots on Bennett but the Terrier goalie was up to the task. Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) rang off the post just a minute later as the Big Green continued to keep BU on its heels.
John Gibson (Okotoks, Alta.) potted the equalizer at 12:45 off his own rebound. Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) brought the puck down passing over to Gibson. The junior took a shot that was rebounded out as he shot over Bennett's shoulder to knot the score at 2-2. Reeds also assisted on the goal.
Matt Reber had a chance to pull his team ahead but he proved to be faster than his shot. J.T. Wyman was the hero for the Big Green as Nick Johnson won the face off at center ice passing to Wyman on the boards. The senior skated in alone on Bennett to pot his 11th goal of the season and his third game winner.
Devine finished with 31 saves while Bennett had 14. With its lowest shot output of the season (17) Dartmouth earned its seventh as the Big Green improves to 7-8-1 as BU falls to 6-11-3.
The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday when it takes on UNH in a neutral site game at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H.
