NEW YORK, N.Y. ? Columbia scored in the final minutes of play, but it was not enough as Dartmouth's Lucky Mkosana's (Bulawayo,
Zimbabwe) two second-half goals proved to be the difference, as the Big Green dispatched the Lions, 3-1.
Mkosana snapped a three-game scoreless streak by tallying two goals including the game-winner against the Lions. He was not the only player to have a multi-point day, as senior Craig Henderson (Wellington, New Zealand) scored yet another Ivy goal and assisted on Mkosana's third while freshman Maarten van Ess (Marlborough, Mass.) recorded two assists.
Despite only taking three shots to Columbia's four in the first half, Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead into the break. The Big Green
converted with 12:32 remaining in the half when Henderson received a ball from van Ess in front of the goal and beat a
diving Alex Aurrichio to the low right corner.
The Big Green came out blazing in the second half and Mkosana scored two quick goals in the first 11 minutes to expand Dartmouth's lead to 3-0. The game-winner came in the 47th minute of play when van Ess gave a back pass to Mkosana who blasted a shot to the top right corner. He struck again in the 56th minute after he made a breakaway and took a feed from Henderson, beating Aurrichio to the far post.
Columbia battled Dartmouth to the end, taking eight shots in the half and forcing Sean Milligan (Westport, Conn.) to make four saves. With just under three minutes to play, Columbia was awarded a corner kick. Peter Morice sent a ball into the box where Scott Strickland was able to redirect the ball with a header, but Milligan punched the ball over the crossbar, giving the Lions a second chance.
This time, Columbia was able to convert. Morice once again sent the ball into the middle of the box where Felipe Castrillon collected it and perfectly placed a low shot to the corner, pulling the Lions within two.
For the game, Columbia held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots, and had six corners while only giving up one to the Big Green. Milligan finished with five saves in goal to pace the Big Green's defense.
Dartmouth (7-5-1, 2-1-1 Ivy) returns to action Saturday, November 1, hosting Harvard for a 7 p.m. matchup.
