HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team used a 4-2 defeat of Bemidji State on Monday evening to capture the Ledyard National Bank Classic. Dartmouth's Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.), Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) all were placed on the All-Tournament team while Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) was the tournament MVP.
The Big Green (8-4) began things quickly when Shields scored the first goal of the game at 11:35 in the opening frame. Nick Walsh (Shannonville, Ont.) passed across the circle to Shields who fired over netminder Matt Dalton's left shoulder for the score.
A power play strike from Goggin at 8:28 gave Dartmouth a two-goal cushion. Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) brought the puck down passing across to Goggin at the point for the freshman's second goal of the season.
The Beavers got one back midway through the second when Matt Francis capitalized on an expiring Big Green power play but Reeds and Matt Reber teamed up for Dartmouth's third goal with under a minute to play in the period as the home team again went up by two.
Reeds began the play with a point-blank shot that was saved by Dalton, but the BSU goalie was pulled to the side as Reber was able to slide the puck past him for his second goal of the weekend.
Just :22 into the final stanza Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) teamed up with Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) and Joe Gaudet (Etna, N.H.) for the boom-boom play.
Brad Hunt scored the final goal for the Beavers with three minutes left in the game.
O'Neill (8-3) finished with 25 saves while Dalton (8-5) had 21. The Big Green got to the Championship game after a 5-4 overtime win over Army. In the Consolation game UMass took a 4-1 win over the Black Knights.
Dartmouth will take to the road this coming weekend with league games against Quinnipiac on Saturday and Princeton on Sunday.
