Dartmouth Among Nation's Leaders in NCAA APR Recognition

Indianapolis, Ind. ? For the second straight year, 24 of Dartmouth College's varsity athletic teams will receive public recognition from the NCAA for having Academic Progress Rate scores among the Top 10% nationally in their respective sport.
Dartmouth also stands second nationally in number of teams honored by the NCAA for the second year in a row. In the measured academic year of 2006-07, 21 of Dartmouth's 28 teams were perfect in terms of eligibility and retention and 11 teams have been perfect over all four years of reporting. Ivy schools took the top six spots in number of teams honored (see below), with Bucknell coming in as the top non-Ivy with 17 teams honored.
The Academic Progress Rate is a measure of the eligibility and retention of student athletes participating in NCAA sports at any Division I institution. Each NCAA varsity team is given a score on a scale from 1-1000 (1000 meaning that every individual on that team was academically eligible for the following term and either returned to school or graduated). Individual teams with a score below 925 over a multi-year period are subject
to penalties. All of the 28 Dartmouth teams measured (as well as all Ivy teams) were well above the penalty line.
A total of 150 Ivy League teams were "commended" -- at least one in each of the 35 NCAA sports in which at least one Ivy team competes -- for an average of 18.75 teams per school.
Ivy teams comprised 21% of the 712 teams honored from across 191 Division I colleges and universities (138 schools had no commended teams). The average of 18.75 teams at each of the eight Ivy schools is more than two-thirds more than the next best conference average (11), and more than the best score of any non-Ivy school.
More than three-fifths (62.8%) of the total of 239 Ivy teams in NCAA-sponsored sports were recognized. Dartmouth exceeded this figure by having 85.7% of its NCAA-sponsored teams recognized (24 of 28). The Ivy League is the only conference to have commendations for all of its football teams.
