HANOVER, N.H. -- Dartmouth College today released its 2009 baseball schedule, which includes 41 games and an extended trip to California. But perhaps the most anticipated trip takes place well before opening day when the Big Green travel to the Dominican Republic for an unparalleled international tour.
From Dec. 10-19, Head Coach Bob Whalen will lead his squad in the Dominican Republic to play six games against players from the academies of the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres. While there, the student-athletes and coaches will be able to immerse themselves in the baseball-crazy culture that currently has more citizens in the major leagues than any other country after the United States.
“I've always wanted to give our players and program an international experience,” Coach Whalen commented. “There is no better place to give them an international baseball experience than the Dominican Republic. Utilizing our alumni contacts of David Howard with the Mets and Sandy Alderson with the Padres, we were able to set up these games. This allows our players a cultural and baseball experience they could not get anywhere else.”
The spring season will begin on the final day of February with a doubleheader at Duke, and a single game the following day against the Blue Devils. After a four-game set at Hofstra on March 7-8, Dartmouth heads to the West Coast to play eight games against Pacific, San Jos? State, Santa Clara and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
Upon returning, the Ivy League season gets under way when the Big Green play a doubleheader at Penn on March 28. Dartmouth will attempt to avenge its loss in the Ivy League Championship series last year the next day in a twinbill at Columbia.
The renovations of Rolfe Field will be on display for the first time when Biondi Park opens on April 1 for the home opener against Siena. That game is the start of a 10-game homestand.
Biondi Park will be officially dedicated on April 25 when Harvard comes to town for two games that day. Just as the regular season began versus an ACC opponent, so shall it conclude on April 29 at Boston College.
Should Dartmouth successfully defend its division title, it will play in the Ivy League Championship series on May 2-3.
