Dartmouth Women's Soccer (8-6, 3-2 Ivy) This Week:
Game 15: Dartmouth at Harvard (7-6-1, 4-1 Ivy)
Date: Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 11:00 AM
Location: Ohiri Field Cambridge, Mass.
Record: Harvard leads, 15-13-3
The two Ivy rivals meet for the 32nd time on Saturday, with
Dartmouth looking to ride the wave of its recent success in the series. Since
2000, Dartmouth is 7-1-1, winning seven-straight from 2000-06 before Harvard
took a 1-0 victory in 2007. The Big Green displayed heart last season, 2008, on
senior day, tying the 24th ranked Crimson 1-1 despite the Ivy title
being out of reach. That result ultimately forced Harvard to share the Ivy
crown with Princeton. The all-time series dates back to 1978 and Dartmouth did
not pick up its first win until 1982, a 2-1 overtime triumph.

This Time Out: Dartmouth heads to first-place Harvard with its Ivy Championship hopes hanging in the balance. The Big Green is in a good place, having rebounded from its loss at Penn by defeating both Vermont, 3-0, and Columbia, 2-0, last week. Harvard recently had a six game winning-streak snapped with a 1-0 loss to Princeton at home last Saturday. It's been an unpredictable season for the Crimson, which lost five of its first seven games of the season.
The Ivy Title Race: The Big Green sits in second place with nine points at 3-2 while Harvard and Yale are tied for first with 12 points at 4-1. A Dartmouth win would put the Big Green into a tie with Harvard, while both teams would need Yale to lose to either Columbia this Friday night or Brown the following weekend. It has been a wild fall in the Ancient Eight so far and there are still many scenarios left in the final two weeks of Ivy play. Full Ivy standings are available here.
Last Time Out: A late first half goal and a dominant second half performance gave Dartmouth a 2-0 win over Columbia this past Sunday, Oct. 25. After a tightly played first half, the Big Green absolutely dominated Columbia in the second, outshooting the Lions, 11-1, in the period. Overall, the Big Green wound up with a 17-5 shot advantage, putting eight attempts on goal. Senior back Thea Sutton (San Rafael, Calif.) scored her first collegiate goal late in the first half off a corner kick from classmate Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.). Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) added the insurance goal in the second half with a header off a Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) corner and Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) anchored the shutout in goal.
Honors Abound: After shutout wins against Vermont, 3-0, and Columbia, 2-0, last week, two Dartmouth players picked up awards. Freshman Kim Rose (Seaford, N.Y.) was named the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week. A midfielder, Rose came into her last week, starting both games in just her fourth and fifth appearances of the season. She played a full 90 in the 2-0 win over Columbia and marked reigning Ivy Player of the Year Sophie Reiser, helping hold her to just two shots. Against Vermont, Rose helped Dartmouth dominate the Catamounts, holding them to one shot while putting two attempts on goal herself.
Senior Thea Sutton (San Rafael, Calif.) was named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week and the Ivy honor roll. Sutton was solid in the backline and beyond in the pair of shutout wins, helping Dartmouth hold its two opponents to a combined six shots. Against Columbia, Sutton came up big, scoring her first collegiate goal and the game-winner late in the first half. After a fairly balanced first, Sutton contributed to a defensive effort that held Columbia to just one shot in the entire second half and five total for the game. Sutton also contributed solid defense in the shutout of Vermont, holding the Catamounts to only one attempt in 90 minutes of play.
Classy Senior: Senior midfielder Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) has been named one of 10 national finalists for the prestigious Lowe's Senior Class Award. The award recognizes excellence in competition, community, classroom and character. An All-Ivy and All-Northeast midfielder, Sack is the co-founder of Athletes United at Dartmouth and spent a semester volunteering for Soccer Without Borders in Nicaragua. Next Time Out: Dartmouth has a quick turnaround before traveling to Bryant on Nov. 3 for its final non-conference game. The Big Green returns to Burnham for its last regular season game on Nov. 7 against Cornell at 6:30 p.m. for Senior Night.
