HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's basketball team committed 20 turnovers in the opening half and couldn't recover as the Big Green fell to Temple, 64-38, in non-conference action at Leede Arena.
Dartmouth (1-1) got a team-high seven points from junior Brittney Smith (Fort Worth Texas) and sophomore Jalea Moses (Brooklyn, N.Y.), while Smith collected 11 boards, five of which were offensive. Also chipping in were freshman Faziah Steen (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and senior captain Michelle Meyer (Covington, Ohio) with six points apiece.
The Owls (3-0) saw Jasmine Stone earn a double-double with game highs in both points and rebounds. She netted 11 points and pulled down 13 boards, including six offensive rebounds. Kristen McCarthy was key for Temple with 10 points and four steals, while LaKeisha Eaddy was all over the court with nine points and eight steals.
Temple opened the game with a quick 8-0 run, aided by five-straight turnovers by the Big Green. Smith got the Big Green on the board with a jumper from the foul line at the 16:12 mark of the first half.
Dartmouth cut the lead down to 8-4 on a nice drive by senior captain Betsy Williams (Norwich, Vt.) and held the Owls scoreless for the next 4:15, but couldn't capitalize. Temple got things going again at the 11:21 mark with back-to-back buckets to push the lead to 12-4.
After Smith added a layup to make it 15-8 with 7:32 left in the half, the Owls extended their pressure and went on a 17-2 run to close out the half and led 32-10 at the midway point.
Turnovers were the story for the Big Green in the first half. Dartmouth ended up with 20 in the first 20 minutes of play and shot 3-of-21 from the field. Temple shot 50 percent (15-of-30) from the floor with most of its baskets coming as the layup variety.
The Big Green came out of halftime and got two quick 3-pointers from Meyer to slim the lead down to 36-16 two minutes into the second half. The Owls got a jumper from Shaqwedia Wallace to stop the Dartmouth run. Temple added another bucket, then BJ Williams sunk the Owls' first 3-pointer of the game to make it 39-18.
Steen brought the Big Green back with a strong layup at 39-20 with 15:35 remaining. After a tray from BJ Williams and a Temple free throw made it 46-20, Smith converted on an old-fashion three-point play at the 10:51 mark.
Dartmouth played even with the Owls for the final minutes of the contest, but couldn't cut into the lead. Highlighting the last five minutes was freshman Kylie Kufeld (Billings, Mont.), who tallied five points down the stretch, while Steen added a layup and a couple of free throws. It wasn't enough on the night as the Big Green fell, 64-38, to Temple.
The Owls shot 48 percent (30-of-63) from the field and created 31 Dartmouth turnovers, which turned into 29 points. The Big Green struggled from the floor, shooting just 25 percent (11-of-44) and was 3-of-15 from the beyond arc.
Dartmouth will be back in action this coming Sunday as the Big Green face Hartford at 2 p.m. at Leede Arena. Fans are reminded that the women's basketball team will be sponsoring a food drive for the Haven and offering free admission to senior citizens. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the game in support of this great cause.
