HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 4-1 loss to Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon in Thompson Arena. All five goals were scored in the first period before both goalies buckled down and prevented anymore scoring.
The Dartmouth men's hockey team started off very flat and saw itself behind by three goals at the end of the first period. Kyle Reeds (St. Louis, Mo.) looked like he was going to help his team to an easy victory as the junior lit the lamp just a minute into the contest with the first shot of the game. Matt Reber (Edina, Minn.) and Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) each picked up an assist.
But it was the Pioneers that appeared to have all the momentum as SHU scored goals 6:53, 11:29, 16:51 and 17:41 into the first stanza.
Neither team put any more goals on the board in the second but things were beginning to look up for the Big Green as Dartmouth outshot Sacred Heart 12-10 in the frame.
Dartmouth again put the shots on the board in the third but just couldn't find its way past netminder Steven Legatto who picked up his third win of the season for SHU, saving 35 shots. Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) in net for the Big Green is now 3-6 on the season, making 30 saves on the night.
The contest was billed as military appreciation night as past and present members of the armed forces received free admission to the game. Sergeant Darren Bray, a long-time season ticket holder and supporter of Dartmouth men's hockey was on hand for a ceremonial puck drop to start the game. Sgt. Bray is going to be deployed in January for his second tour of duty overseas.
The Big Green will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 19 with an twin-state matchup at Vermont. Game time is set for 4:00 pm in Gutterson Fieldhouse.
