PROVIDENCE, R.I. - What began as a fairly even battle ended with the Dartmouth men's hockey team completely dominating the third period as the Big Green walked away with a 5-2 ECAC League win over Brown in Meehan Auditorium on Friday night. Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) potted two goals in the win and is now Dartmouth's leading goal scorer on the year. The Big Green improved to 12-7-3, 9-4-2 in the ECAC while Brown fell to 2-16-4, 2-11-3.
At 12:02 in the opening frame a goal by Brown's Matt Vokes was the first strike of the game. Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) brought the puck down for a shot but it was saved by netminder Dan Rosen who pushed it up to Mike Wolff as Wolff shot up to Vokes. The senior took a shot that was saved as the puck got tied up in his skate. Vokes eventually got his stick down and swept the puck around Dartmouth goalie Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.).
The Big Green tied things at 8:14 with a power play goal of its own. Owsiak passed to Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) behind the net. The rookie then got the puck out to senior Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) out front as the Dartmouth captain one-timed the puck past Rosen for his fifth of the season.
With a 5-on-3 early in the second period Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) helped the Big Green score the go-ahead goal. Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) brought puck from behind the net out to a waiting Fleming, who notched his team-leading ninth of the year.
Fleming almost added to the tally with another shorthanded bid late in the frame as he skated in alone on net but Rose was up to the task stopping the puck cold.
The Bears tied the game at two with less than 2:00 to play in the second when Vokes notched his second goal of the contest with a power play strike.
Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) pulled his team ahead in the third after Pritchard took a shot that Rosen saved by diving to his right. Stephens was there for the rebound as he buried it into the empty side of the net.
Dartmouth had another 5-on-3 opportunity but a defensive save and a tremendous effort by Wolff prevented the BIg Green from adding to its total.
An even strength goal at 3:01 by Fleming had the sophomore punching it through for his second of the night. Estoclet and Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) worked the puck around before getting it down low to Fleming for the score.
Kyle Reeds (St. Lois, Mo.) passed to Shields with 1:31 left in the contest for an empty net goal as the Big Green came away with a 5-2 win.
O'Neill made 27 saves in the win as he improves to 12-6-3. Rosen made 35 saves and falls to 1-11-3.
Dartmouth will be back in action tomorrow for another league game against Yale in New Haven, game time is set for 7:00 pm.
