HANOVER, N.H. - Bouncing off the leg of Christian Morissette, the Renssselaer Engineers took the first game, 3-2, in the best of three series against the Dartmouth men's hockey on Friday in Thompson Arena. Morissette's game winner came at 11:11 of the overtime frame.
The Big Green's Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) had both his team's goals on the night as the sophomore forward was looking for his first career hat trick. He almost scored it with the game winner late in the third period but RPI netminder Allen York was up to the challenge with an outstretched leg save that kept the score knotted at two.
Dartmouth got on the board first 3:54 into the first period when Fleming fired over York's shoulder with an assist going to Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.).
The Engineers tied things up with 6:27 left in the frame after Seth Klerer got the puck along the boards and skated step by step with Dartmouth defender Jim Gaudet (Etna, N.H.). Klerer was just one step faster as he was able to get his stick down and flick the puck past netminder Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.).
Dartmouth got the goal back at 12:51 of the second when O'Neill made a save and pushed the puck forward towards a streak Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.). The senior passed across ice to a streaking Fleming who fired glove side on York.
RPI's tying goal came at 17:47 off a strike by Jordan Watts as the two headed for overtime.
A spirited but slightly sluggish extra frame ensured as neither side seemed to get control. With his second assist of the night Jeff Foss set his teammate up for the game winner as the Engineers improved to 8-25-2 on the season. Dartmouth falls to 14-13-3.
The two teams will meet for Game Two on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
