Sailing - Open & Women's
vs Hatch Brown Trophy
4/3/2009 12:00:00 AM | Sailing - Open & Women's
Saturday: After a calm morning, perfect conditions under sunny and blue skies allowed
all 45 races of the round-robin and one tie break race to be completed. The first race
stared at 11:40 in the minimum three knots SE wind. A couple subsequent starts were
aborted for the three knot minimum rule but the wind kept building and settled in from
ESE reaching a maximum of 12 knots. The Charles River Fog reached Medford in the form
of low clouds after 4:00 knocking the breeze back to 5-8 for the final two flights.
The level of team racing was outstanding. It is clear that these women's teams prepared
for this event. The teams started well, sailed fast, and executed close quarter maneuvers
throughout the day. Only one protest was heard by judge Peter Johns which was disallowed.
No breakdowns.
The format for tomorrow is to run a consolation single round-robin for the bottom six teams
followed by a double round-robin for the top four teams.
The Medford Boat Club, Tufts next door neighbor, opened their doors for boat rotation,
shelter, etc. Coaches watched from the second floor luxury lounge. SailGroove.org
(Chris Love) arrived with the late afternoon clouds to video the last few races.
Sunday: Yes, it rained all day but the breeze was NE 4-10 and shifty a.m. and NNE 8-12 p.m.
which is straight down the lake. 15 consolation races and one re-sail (10:30-12:20) were
followed by 12 gold fleet races (12:50-3:00). No protests, all fouls were resolved on the
water without umpires. One breakdown.
Congrats to BC for winning the first women's team race intersectional. All three BC/Harvard
races were spectacular with jibing duels, multiple mark traps, and overlapped finishes.
BC clinched after winning their first 12 races then lost the next two.
Tufts provided the drama in the consolation series. After losing their first two, crew Katie
Booras provided the turning point by doing a back flip into the water during a close race with
MIT. Meanwhile MIT was winning every race despite much improved sailing by St. Mary's.
Stanford got on their own winning streak until they met Tufts who competed with only two boats
while the third replaced two hiking straps. Tufts won with a 1-2-DNS, won another, then won a
close re-sail with MIT to win the consolation fleet.
