HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth men's hockey team put up a valiant effort against ECAC and Ivy League foe Yale on Sunday afternoon. Trailing 1-0 going into the third period, the Big Green had put up several great chances but couldn't find the back of the net. The Bulldogs tallied back-to-back goals midway through the final stanza in what looked like an insurmountable lead. But Back-to-back Dartmouth goals had the Big Green down by one before Yale got an empty netter for the 4-2 final.
After a scoreless first period that had the two teams skating pretty evenly, the Big Green killed off a Bulldog penalty to begin the second period. Just three minutes later a Yale penalty gave Dartmouth a power play chance but just seconds after the penalty began Mark Arcobello scored a shorthanded tally to break up the scoreless tie. Jimmy Martin stripped the puck from a Big Green defender passing ahead to Arcobello for the senior's fourth goal of the season.
Netminder Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) proved huge time and time again during the contest and had several big saves. With less than 9:00 to go in the second, Hanover native Denny Kearney tried to take advantage of an empty net as his teammate had pulled the sophomore out of the net. But with great athleticism, O'Neill was able to leap backwards and get his stick out, robbing Kearney of what he thought was a sure goal.
Dartmouth had several terrific chances throughout the frame but just could not find the back of the net to even the score.
Yale took a two-goal lead at 13:45 of the final period when Jeff Anderson took a shot that looked like O'Neill had saved in his glove. Unfortunately when the goalie put his hand down, the puck dropped out and behind.
The Bulldogs tallied their third, less than 20 seconds later when Arcobello stole the puck and shot from the side of the net for his second goal of the game.
The contest got extremely chippy toward the later part of the period as four players sat in the box for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct. Then Yale got a third sent to the box setting up Dartmouth's second power play goal in seven games. Joe Stejskal took a slapshot that was saved out to Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.). Jones passed off to linemate Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.) who buried the puck with his fourth goal of the weekend.
O'Neill was pulled with 3:08 left on the clock in favor of the extra-man as the Big Green also had 1:00 of power play time. As the Yale skater came out of the box Dartmouth was still set in their power play formation. Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) took a shot that brother Mark Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was there to put past Malcolm for the second goal of the game.
With O'Neill out of the net again, Yale's Brendan Mason put a capper on the scoring with an empty net strike that was almost saved by Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.).
Dartmouth will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to Manchester to take on in-state rival, New Hampshire in a 7:00 pm contest.
